HOLIDAY G1 - Wild brown trout fishing on the river Orbigo and its tributaries.
Information
The rivers of Leon have been described by American friends as resembling the rivers of the Pacific North-West such as the San Pedro. They run roughly north to south through some of the most fantastic mountainous countryside of the Cordilla Cantabrica and Montes Leon ranges.
Most of the trout fishing is around 3 to 4000ft.
Hundreds of kilometres of free fishing on the rich trout waters of the river Orbigo and its tributaries, ideal for the fly or the spinner, also a lake with Carp and Black Bass all with easy access.
Places of interest include the Medieval Bridge on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella in Hospital de Orbigo. And the natural beauty of the Omanas valley.
Season, from the 8th. of April to the 28th. of July, extended to the 15th. of October on the Orbigo as catch and release.
Hotels on the banks of the rivers cost approx. £32 per night for 2 people in a double room. Booking forms in Spanish and English are included.
How to get there
Ferry to Santander from Plymouth with Brittany ferries from approx. £188 for 2 people return, and a 200 mile drive on good roads.
Fly from Gatwick to Leon with Iberia or BA. - approx.£300 per person return, and then rent a car from £16 per day. Approx.30 minute drive to the river. Alternatively, take a cheap flight to Madrid. It is then approximately a 3 hour dirve.
