Information

The mighty Esla and its tributaries are the most famous of all Spanish trout rivers and hold one of the most important stocks of wild trout in Europe. From the mountain streams above the Riano dam fed by spring snow melt and rain to the lush meadows below Cistierna, this area is the centre of Spanish trout fishing.The cocks of Leon bred especially for their feathers, you must visit the Cokerels of Leon.

Places of interest include the X1 century Cistercian Church in Gredafes, and the wild life of the high country above the Riano Dam.

Season, from the 8th. of April to the 28th. of July, extended to the 15th. of October on the dam and below as catch and release.

Hotels on the banks of the rivers from £20 to £30 per night for 2 people in a double room.

How to get there.

Ferry to Santander from Plymouth with Brittany ferries from approx. £188 for 2 people return, and a 200 mile drive on good roads.

Fly from Gatwick to Leon with Iberia or BA. - approx.£300 per person return, and then rent a car from £16 per day. Approx.30 minute drive to the river. Alternatively, take a cheap flight to Madrid. It is then approximately a 3 hour dirve.
